About Our Organization

Our Fourteenth Year as a Habitat Affiliate!

In 1994 we became the 1000th U.S. Affiliate for Habitat for Humanity International and completed our first house.  Since that time we have completed one house each year, completing our Eleventh House at the end of 2004.

Our Twelfth House is a three-bedroom home under construction at Nelson High School.  This is a win-win for Habitat and the High School.  Each year the students build a home, and there is a great deal of expense in marketing the home each year.  This partnership solves Habitat’s problem of insufficient labor in Nelson County, and also assures the High School that they will have a buyer for their home.  Once completed, this house will be moved to property in Arrington.  Funding for the materials for this house have been donated by the Individual Agents of Wintergreen Real Estate in Nellysford as part of their sponsorship of the 2004 NCHFH Golf Tournament.  These Agents pledged a portion of all commissions toward the final total of $44,000.  We are grateful for their participation and their recognition of the need for businesses in Nelson County to become actively involved in Habitat.

We also hope to complete our Thirteenth House in 2005.  To make this happen, we will need the help of builders, plumbers, electricians, excavators, carpenters, and other skilled individuals! Nelson County Habitat homes are located in Arrington, Piney River, Roseland, Shipman and Tyro.

Nelson County, with a population of about 14,000, is located in Central Virginia between the James River and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  While Nelson County boasts many farms and beautiful homes with mountain views, recent census estimates approximately 40% of the homes in the county are considered substandard.  Some of the homes have inadequate or nonexistent plumbing.  Many have poor insulation, no central heat, and/or rotting roofs and floors, making them unsafe.

It is the mission of the Nelson County Affiliate to help solve the problem of inadequate housing, one Partner Family at a time.  Anyone wishing to become involved may call the office at 434-361-0201, send an Email to the
